War On Drugs Free Essay Example, 1250 words

Less than 100 years ago, narcotic and hallucinogenic drugs were not only legal but were sold openly in the United States. They were prescribed freely and were even used as food additives. Many doctors and pharmacists earned a lucrative living by "supplying opiates to drug addicts". As the dangers of these drugs became more evident, laws became increasingly more restrictive regarding the sale and usage of these substances, until they had become outlawed or strictly regulated. By the mid-1950's in the United States, the American Bar Association and the American Medical Association became critical of the use of punishment against addicts and suggested rehabilitation and the use of drug clinics as a better and more humane alternative to punishing them (Meier). Despite these recommendations, the political and social climate of the country was bent towards punitive measures. Penalties for drug related crimes increased in severity. The United States government under President Richard Nixon started its drug use and drug trade prevention strategy through an initiative called War on Drugs in 1971. Media popularized this term after Nixon gave a press conference, a day after his address to the Congress, during which he stated that drug abuse is America s number one enemy. Interview With An Individual Who Works For Malmbergets Aif

For this assignment, I decided to conduct my interview with an individual who works for Malmbergets AIF (AIF = public sports club) in Malmberget, situated in the far north of Sweden. Established in 1904, the veteran club is and have been active within numerous sports, from soccer to cross country skiing, and throughout the club’s long history, one will find stories of great success, such as when its Olympic handball team played in the highest division in the mid-seventies, or one of the clubs cross-country skiers, Lina Andersson, won Olympic gold in 2006. Although, today, MAIF’s efforts are mainly focused on youth programs in various sports, with the ice-hockey team being the sole remaining adult team. Nonetheless, there are still some†¦show more content†¦Given that MAIF operates within a number of different sports, Johansson describes that the best part is that his job changes with the seasons. During winter, he’ll get to focus on sports like ice hocke y, and during summer, he can focus on their youth programs for soccer. Much like several other positions within the sport industry – at least in terms of working for a sports club –, what the job entails changes between seasons, but the difference for Johansson is that there’s never an off-season, which Johansson admits is challenging at times, but that he wouldn’t have it any other way, as he claims it â€Å"keeps [him] running†, despite his age. Likewise, when asked whether or not the job truly is as rewarding, easy going, and appealing as he makes it seem, he paused, before giving a lengthy explanation regarding the effort required to do the job, saying that â€Å"it’s going to require hard work at times†, before adding that â€Å"that is the reality for most jobs†, but that he truly believes that his interest in what he does is what motivates him to push through it. He admits to have been lucky for – officially – entering the industry at a later stage in his career, and for a position higher up the chain, because he’s not sure his â€Å"passion for sports would have survived otherwise†, which I think might be the harsh truth a lot of individuals interested in a career within the industry might not get to hear. Vegetarianism Why it is the Better Choice. Essay Example For Students

Vegetarianism: Why it is the Better Choice. Essay Veg The trend of abstaining from eating meat and other animal products is a rapidly growing one. According to David Bender in Animal Rights Opposing Viewpoints, Today, nearly twenty million Americans are vegetarians, and many more have greatly reduced their meat consumption (139). One meat-eating person may ponder why these non-meat eaters would deprive themselves of the wonderful taste of meat and animal products. Another concern is over nutrition, mainly protein intake. Many meat eaters believe that a vegetarian diet does not and cannot supply the protein necessary for the body to function properly. We will write a custom essay on Vegetarianism: Why it is the Better Choice. specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now There are many misconceptions (like the one above) and unknown facts associated with the vegetarian lifestyle. This essay will deal with the issue of nutrition and reveal the truth about how the vegetarian diet can improve ones well being by, making weigh loss easier, boosting the level of energy one feels on a day to day basis, reducing the risks of Atheseriousis, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, and heart disease. There are also many unknown facts associated with the vegetarian way of life. One of which is the great role vegetarians play in reducing the amount of waste in the environment. What this statement means is that by not eating meat one is promoting the use of farmland for food for humans instead of farmland for grazing animals (this greatly reduces water usage and waste; it also cuts down on the acreage of farm land used.) Water usage will become an increasing problem if more people do not find and implement water conservation methods. According to data taken from John Robbins in Diet for a New America, if something is not done, the water in the Texas aquifers will be exhausted in less than thirty-five years (1). For reasons that will become clearer after reading this essay, vegetarianism seems to be an answer to the problem of water usage. With the increasing amount of land being used for farming to mainly feed animals used for food by us, comes increased soil erosion and leeching. Leeching is a term used to describe the process of the loss of nutrients from the soil, and the end result is sand that cannot support plant life. Vegetarians help to reduce the amount of farmlands needed to support animals. According to Robbins, in Diet for a New America, Since 1967, the rate of deforestation in the U. S. has been one acre every five seconds; at the present rate, the U.S. will be completely stripped of its forests in fifty years (as of 1987); at its own rate, the tropical rainforests of central America will be destroyed in forty years (as of 1987). Something drastic needs to be done to save what little forests we have left. Again, vegetarianism seems to be the answer. Most of the forestland destroyed is used for grazing land for farm animals. If the demand for these animal products and by-products is reduced, then there will not be a need for such a rapid clearing of the forests of the world. The issue of animal waste is also a great concern to mankind. In a way, we are the cause to our own demise. The waste from the animals we use for food pollutes our water supplies and promotes the spread of disease. Becoming a vegetarian helps reduce the amount of waste in our world because of the reduction of farm animals. Along with the issue of animal waste comes the issue of energy waste. The conversion of energy from plant to meat is very poor. Much of the energy is used by the animal and is not stored in the meat of the animal, so obviously using the plant as a source of energy is much more efficient. Along with the benefits to the environment and the health of people, a vegetarian diet also lessens the suffering that animals have to endure. It is a medically proven fact that animals do feel pain and the practices of factory farming subject the animals involved to unimaginable amounts of pain. Modern man should find it morally right to become a vegetarian. .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .postImageUrl , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:hover , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:visited , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:active { border:0!important; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:active , .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5ed7b88641220581d0bbc186deb4029e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: bush's crazyness Essay For the reasons stated above, vegetarianism seems to be in our future.
